NICK BRANDT - FOTOGRAFIA - ENGLAND

Photographer Nick Brandt was born in 1966 and raised in England. He studied Painting and Film before he moved to America in the early 1990s to direct many award-winning videos. In 2000, Nick Brandt embarked upon his ambitious photographic project: a trilogy of works to memorialize the vanishing natural grandeur of East Africa. What makes his work unique is the fact that his work is a combination of epic panoramas of animals within dramatic landscapes, and graphic portraits more akin to studio portraiture of human subjects from the early 20th century – as if these animals were already long dead, from a bygone era. These iconic portraits of its majestic animals are filled with an empathy usually reserved for human subjects. Notably, Nick Brandt photographs on medium-format black and white film without telephoto or zoom lenses. In 2016 he released his latest series »Inherit the Dust«.

After his first exhibition at CAMERA WORK gallery in 2005, Nick Brandt went on to have multiple solo exhibitions worldwide, including in New York, Los Angeles, London, Sydney, Munich, Brussels, and Paris. His first large solo museum exhibition was shown by FOTOGRAFISKA in Stockholm in 2011. In September 2010, in urgent response to the escalation of poaching in Africa due to increased demand from the Far East, Nick Brandt founded the non-profit organization »Big Life Foundation«, dedicated to the conservation of Africa's wildlife and ecosystems.

Selected New Work 2010-2011.
These photos, taken during 2010-11, are the first release of new photographs in two years. These photos will be included in the final part of my trilogy. The title of this third book will complete the titles of the first two books - "On This Earth, A Shadow Falls..." to form one consecutive sentence. Another set of photos will be released in two years time, which in theory will coincide with the release of this third book. The photos, darker in tone than previous work, reflect the further ongoing diminishing of the natural world of Africa. The three photographs of rangers holding tusks are all from elephants killed at the hands of man within the Amboseli/Tsavo ecosystem. The rangers in the photos are part of the team from BIG LIFE FOUNDATION, the non-profit organization I started in Sept 2010 in an effort to halt what was an alarming and massive escalation of poaching in East Africa. So far, working within the Amboseli ecosystem of Kenya and Northern Tanzania, the Big Life teams have successfully dramatically reduced the level of poaching and other killings of animals in the region. The problem remains rampant elsewhere. Please go to www.biglifeafrica.org to learn more and hopefully donate to help our cause. One series of photos are portraits of some of the last big bull elephants still alive in Amboseli - a photographic record of some of the finest of them before the worst may occur and they are murdered for their ivory or speared as human population encroaches further on their land. One, Elephant with Half Ear, was killed six weeks after the photo of him was taken in July 2010. Another new series of photos, The Calcified, are photos of calcified dead creatures that I found on the shoreline of a lake in Tanzania. The extremely high soda content of the lake preserves them in this calcified form. I took the creatures exactly as I found them on the shoreline, and then placed them in 'living' positions, bringing them back to 'life', as it were. Reanimated, 'alive' again in death. Of the other photos, "Elephant Skull" was a unique sight, as, one elephant after another came over to the skull during the course of half an hour, quietly, gently smelling it, feeling it with their trunks, clearly knowing exactly whose skull it was. And finally, for those who like to question the veracity of some of the images, the giraffe skull on the lake bed in "Giraffe Skull" was genuinely there in that spot as the giraffes walked by in the background. MUSEUM EXHIBITION, STOCKHOLM, OCT 6-JAN 8 2012 In other news, There will be a very large museum exhibition opening on October 6 at Fotografiska Museum in Stockholm, in which giant prints of all the best work through to the present day will be on view.
